There will probably always be debate about “who” really built the world’s first tractor. But one debate you’ll never hear is that,
“One day, just by random chance a plow-horse evolved into an internal combustion engine powered farm tractor.”
~ Anything having existence has a creator. ~
Created things in some way always reflect the thoughts and intentions of whoever created them.
In the very first book of the Bible, the book of Genesis, we are taught that God created all things.
Mankind is uniquely described as being created in God’s image.
As His image bearers, we should be reflections of His character and nature. That’s a high calling !
Genesis chapter 3 teaches that the very first man, Adam, had the responsibility of leading his wife, Eve, in obedience to God. Adam failed. He and Eve disobeyed God by taking the only thing that God said was off-limits. The Bible calls Adam’s actions sin.
Since you and I are in the lineage of humanity, we are then descendants of Adam. As his descendants, we have an inherent nature. The bad news is that the nature which we have inherited is Adam’s sinful nature. Our disobedience and rebellion toward God flows naturally out of our condition and comes at a great cost to us. Our Creator, God, is Holy and without sin; He can not and will not allow sin into His presence. Because God is just, He must fully punish sin and those who practice sin. The wages (what we earn) for our sin against Him is death. This means more than the end of our earthly physical existence. It means eternal condemnation and God’s righteous wrath against us for the high treason we’ve committed against Him.
Here’s where the Good News enters the story.
About 2,000 years ago something incredible happened both in Heaven and on Earth. In Heaven, God the Father sent God the Son into His own creation (to Earth). He did so to take on ( or “put on”) human flesh and to live for the purpose of dying on behalf of His people (anyone who would trust in Him). This unique man was fully God and fully man. He was given the name Jesus.
Jesus lived the sinless, perfect life that neither Adam, nor you and I have lived.
Because He was God incarnate (a man born of a virgin by the Holy Spirit), He did not inherit the corrupted bloodline of Adam. Whenever He was tempted by sin, He did not act on it as we do.
The Good News gets better!
Because God is rich in mercy and abounding in lovingkindness, He has provided a way for sinful man to be reconciled to this same God who cannot allow sin into His presence.
How can this be?
God, in His mercy, provided a Substitute, a Sin Bearer (one who would cancel our immense sin debt).
He voluntarily took our punishment…our death wages upon Himself. God’s justice and punishment for sin was poured out upon the Son of God on behalf of all who would trust Him as their Savior. What would any of this mean if Jesus remained dead? The Apostle Paul said, “...if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:14
Christians believe that not only did Christ die in the place of sinners,
but He bodily rose from the grave on the third day, just as He foretold.
Jesus fully provides the perfect righteousness that is required to enter into God’s presence by imputing (or crediting) it to His followers. Salvation is entirely God’s work and is a grace gift to undeserving recipients. Like any gift, it must be received. In fact, we are commanded to believe these things. In this lifetime, if we do not repent and believe the gospel, then we will die in our sins and forever be under God’s righteous wrath.
In the world of tractor manufacturing many failures have wound up in the scrap heap and ultimately the iron furnace. But our Creator is a merciful, saving God, abounding in lovingkindness.
“Say to them, ‘As I live!’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’ Ezekiel 33:11
